Our History BRIEF HISTORY OF FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE, KEFFI Federal Medical Center Keffi came into being April 2000 on the facility of the old general hospital keffi built in 1957 by the Premier of the defunct Northern Region; Late Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto. This Development – i.e. the takeover, was sequel to a pronouncement by President Olusegun Obasanjo the previous year, 1999, shortly after assuming office as the democratically elected president. He announced then, that 44 Federal Medical Centers would be established across the country with a view to bringing healthcare delivery services to the people at the grassroots level. FMC Keffi was one of those 44 announced by Mr. President in 1999. Formal handover ceremony took place April 28, 2000 at a brief ceremony in Federal Ministry of Health between officials of Federal Ministry of Health led by the then Minister of State For Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Amina Ndalolo, on the Federal Government side and her team , on behalf of Nasarawa State Government. However, prior to this period, the former general hospital had been managed by the governments of Benue-Plateau, Plateau and Nasarawa States still April 2000, when it was handed over to the Federal Government and assumed a new status as a Tertiary Health Institution. After the handover, clearing work began in earnest at the premises throughout the year 2000, owing to the densely forested nature of the premises. There was need to clear the premises so as to pave way for effective/efficient structural/infrastructural development to commence. The densely forested environment was haven to all sorts of dangerous reptiles which compelled the pioneer Medical Director, Dr. Danjuma Sulai to employ the services of a snake charmer to rid the premises of these dangerous reptiles. First batch of employees in the Center came on board April 2001 following a recruitment exercise conducted earlier in the year for shortlisted candidates to fill in the advertised vacancies. The recruitment was done by the pioneer Governing Board of the Center headed by its chairman.
